I would also consider the effect of a rear tire picking up a stone or dirt clod and depositing it on the lower run of the belt and what it could do when it is squeezed in between the belt and sprocket. I inspected my belt this spring and there is evidence of a pea sized rock that has broken the belts in the belt from just that. I ride a gravel road 0.3 mile to and from the pavement. Also took a trip on a field road one day in a moment of weakness. I'm budgeting for a new belt. I recommend keeping the guard on for the above reason. Max
